St. Paul Floral is a longtime staple of the Payne Avenue Business district in St. Paul’s Eastside neighborhood.

St. Paul Floral owner Gini Perry was watching the news when she saw a story about another local floral shop that had received a BizRecycling Grant and saved money by implementing an organics recycling program. Since St. Paul Floral’s largest waste stream is trimmings from flower arrangements, Perry wanted to start an organics program as well. They contacted BizRecycling for help.

How We Helped

BizRecycling connected Perry with one of our Recycling Experts. The Recycling Expert helped St. Paul Floral discover that they were overpaying for their waste and recycling services. Our Recycling Expert was able to contact a regional manager with St. Paul Floral’s trash hauler, who improved their payment plan and adding an organics collection program.

Our Recycling Expert also aided Perry in applying for a BizRecycling Grant. This grant helped St. Paul Floral start a new organics program. Through the grant, St. Paul Floral received free bins as well as a reward reimbursement grant to pay for their first three months of organics recycling services.

St. Paul Floral has found their transition to be smooth and beneficial. The shop is now diverting roughly 17,000 pounds of organic waste per year. The shop also saves about $3,400 on waste and recycling costs.

“Initially, I was just happy about how much money we would be saving,” said Perry, “but now I’m excited about how little we are actually putting in the trash.”

The trimmings and other organics scraps that the shop is now recycling go to an industrial composting facility where they are reverted into nutrient-rich compost, contributing to a circular economy in the floral industry. This compost may help grow some of St. Paul Floral’s arrangements in the future.
