Peterson Brothers Roofing Company is a construction and roofing contractor servicing the Saint Paul and Minneapolis area since 1952.

Challenge

Peterson Brothers Roofing Company wanted to find ways to improve recycling in their offices. They were also interested in finding ways to recycle at project sites. They reached out to BizRecycling’s Recycling Experts for help.

How We Helped

Our Recycling Experts visited Peterson Brothers to learn about the business and their waste stream. They recommended that Peterson Brothers start a single-sort recycling program. They also helped Peterson Brothers find recycling options for plastic film, scrap metal, aluminum, copper and other roofing materials.

In order to capture more recyclables, Peterson Brothers wanted to equip all of their  trucks and trailers with mobile recycling bins. Our Recycling Expert helped Peterson Brothers apply for a BizRecycling Grant. They used the grant to buy recycling bins for their offices, shop, breakrooms, work trucks and trailers.

Outcome

Staff at Peterson Brothers Roofing Company have quickly embraced the new on-the-go recycling program.

“All of our trucks have recycling cans to use while they are out on site and they empty their recyclables into the larger dumpsters when they return,” Karen Peterson, office manager, said. “There has been more participation than I expected, which has made it all easier”.

With the single-sort recycling program in place, Peterson Brothers was able to reduce their trash pickups. They went from having one dumpster of trash picked up every week to having trash and recycling picked up twice a month. The company is diverting nearly 4,000 pounds of mixed recyclables a year. They are also recycling over 12,000 pounds of scrap metal annually.

“I’d recommend the whole process,” Peterson commented, “it was wonderful.”
