Local and family-run cold storage facility, Newport – St. Paul Cold Storage (NCS) was starting a recycling program. They wanted to make sure that they were recycling as much as possible, but they needed advice.
Director of Operations, Randy Lewis, reached out to BizRecycling for help.
How We Helped
Our Recycling Experts visited NCS to learn more about the business and their waste streams. Helping the business maximize their single-sort recycling collection was one major goal. Other items NCS would be able to recycle were wood pallets and plastic pallet wrap.
Our Recycling Experts helped NCS apply for a BizRecycling Grant. The grant paid for color-coded bins and labels to collect recycling. They also developed a training program for NCS employees.
NCS now recycles over 77,000 pounds of wood, plastic film and mixed recyclables per year. Switching to a single-sort recycling system has generated cost savings on hauling fees, which have been reinvested in their recycling program. They also purchased a new trash compactor.
“We have been really happy with what we have seen for results so far,” Lewis said. “Historically we have had an 8-yard dumpster emptied daily. Our new compactor is emptied once per month.”
