Minnesota Mold & Engineering Group (MME Group) is a manufacturer of plastic and silicone parts.
MME generates a significant amount of plastic and silicone scrap as a by-product of the manufacturing process. This scrap material had been going into the trash, which was not only a big expense for the company, but also a waste of resources. They wanted to find other alternatives to manage their scrap. They reached out to BizRecycling for help.
How We Helped
One of our Recycling Experts visited MME to learn more about their business. Our Recycling Expert was able to refer them to a few local plastic recyclers. They also offered recommendations for improving MME’s existing single-sort recycling system. In addition, MME recycles pallets, scrap metal and plastic film.
A BizRecycling grant allowed MME to purchase standardized and color-coded bins, as well as tilt trucks and other supplies to help streamline their recycling. This has allowed them to develop an impressively organized recycling system.
Since they started working with our Recycling Expert, MME recycles at least 29 tons of scrap plastic per year. They are also recycling more than 9 tons of single-sort recycling. The 9 tons of scrap metal per year they collect has helped fund the purchase of new manufacturing equipment at MME.
Thanks to their efforts to recycle better, MME has cut their trash volume in half, and they are saving about $800 per month on trash hauling expenses. MME is so happy with the results at their Saint Paul facility that they are in the process of implementing similar programs at their Maplewood location.
MME’s Engineer, Tom Turch, told us that, “we’ve been glad to be a part of this green project and can’t wait to see where it goes in the future.”
