La Guadalupana is a Mexican supermarket serving the West Side neighborhood of St. Paul.

After receiving a Hennepin County grant for its Minneapolis store in 2015, La Guadalupana wanted to replicate the success of that program at its St. Paul location. The owners at La Guadalupana felt it was up to them to lead their business and employees to more sustainable practices.

How We Helped

In 2016, the owners worked with our recycling experts and applied for a BizRecycling grant to help the store reduce their waste levels. The grant provided color-coded organics, recycling, and trash bins to use throughout their store.

The BizRecycling program also provided a 6 month supply of certified compostable bag liners to help with the start of an organics recycling program as the store generates significant amounts of food scraps between its kitchen, dining, and deli areas. The BizRecycling grant, has also able to provide the installation of a dishwasher and purchase of reusable dishes which is helping La Guadalupana decrease their waste.

According to the owners, since implementing these changes and adding a 4 yard organics recycling dumpster, they have been able to reduce the size of their trash dumpster from 6 cubic yards to 4 cubic yards.

The owners report that this has resulted in a monthly savings of $200 and an estimated diversion of 1,000 pounds of food waste per week. This has resulted in an estimated 1,000 pounds of food waste being diverted from the landfill each week and saved $200 in monthly service costs.
