Home Street Home is a St. Paul based gourmet food truck making all of their food from scratch, even ketchup and other sauces, using fresh local ingredients.
Home Street Home food truck owners Destiny Buron and Dan Kidd were interested in composting food waste in their food truck as well as in their rented commercial kitchen space. As renters, Buron and Kidd did not have much control over their waste arrangements, which made implementing a new program difficult.
When Buron and Kidd purchased their own commercial kitchen space, they contacted the Recycling Experts at BizRecycling for help setting up organics recycling, as well as single-sort recycling.
How We Helped
Our Recycling Experts visited the new space to evaluate their recycling needs.
Home Street Home met with different haulers to determine which one could accommodate the space and their need for commercial composting service. Of all of the haulers they spoke with, only one could offer the service configuration required for the location.
Despite delays, Home Street Home was able to roll out their new organics and single-sort recycling programs at the start of the food truck season.
Home Street Home composts all of the food prep waste from their kitchen. They also have mobile collection bins on their food truck, and they bring organics and recycling collection bins to catered events. This extra service has been well-received by their clients.
In addition to collecting their prep waste, Home Street Home offers recycling and organics collection streetside when they are out with their food truck. This is a bit more challenging, since it’s difficult to quickly communicate to customers what goes in which bin. Our Recycling Experts joined them to help with customer education at a food truck event in Saint Paul. On that day, they achieved a 93% recycling rate!
Home Street Home now diverts about 6,700 pounds of compostable materials and 6,000 pounds of single-sort recyclables every year.
