Brenntag Great Lakes was reusing and recycling materials such as drums and totes, but they did not have a traditional recycling program. They contacted BizRecycling for help starting one.
How We Helped
BizRecycling connected Brenntag with one of our Recycling Experts. The Recycling Expert determined that nearly half of the materials found in Brenntag’s waste stream could be recycled. They recommended adding a single-sort recycling program to make it easy. Doing this would also bring Brenntag in compliance with the 2016 Minnesota State Recycling Law.
Our Recycling Expert helped Brenntag apply for a BizRecycling Grant. The grant paid for new recycling bins that were paired with every trash bin in the office and on the warehouse floor. Doing this ensured that employees would have an easy time adapting to the new recycling system and would be less likely to throw recyclables into the trash.
With their new recycling program in place, Brenntag was able to exchange one of their garbage dumpsters for a recycling dumpster. They quickly discovered that their recycling program was more successful than they originally anticipated, and ended up switching to a smaller garbage dumpster.
Thanks to their new recycling program, Brenntag’s garbage bill has decreased by almost 50 percent, which is saving them about $2,800 per year. Brenntag’s staff are happy to have a recycling program in place, and work hard to make it a success.
“Employees are going above and beyond to make sure that recyclable material is properly handled,” said Operations Manager Steve Carter.
That dedication has contributed to Brenntag’s recycling an impressive 32,526 pounds of materials annually.
