Applewood Hills Golf Course is an 18-hole public golf course located within an apple orchard near Stillwater.

Applewood Hills Golf Course wanted to find ways to be more environmentally friendly. One place they knew they could do that was to recycle better. They reached out to the Recycling Experts from BizRecycling for help.

How We Helped

Our Recycling Expert visited Applewood Hills Golf Course to learn about their waste management and recycling practices. Although the golf course did have recycling available, our Recycling Expert had some recommendations for improvements. Making sure that all of their garbage bins were paired with a recycling bin was an easy first step.

A bigger step for the golf course was to add organics recycling and compostable dishes. With help from a BizRecycling Organics Rewards grant, Applewood Hills Golf Course was able to purchase a 6-month supply of compostable plates and cutlery, as well as compostable bin liners. The grant also paid for the first three months of organics recycling service.

A BizRecycling recycling grant was used to add organics recycling bins and more waste sorting stations throughout the facility. Once Applewood Hills had all of their new bins and compostable supplies in place, they began a campaign to educate the staff and patrons about the new organics recycling program.

Thanks to their expanded recycling collection and new compostable organics collection, Applewood Hills Golf Course was able to reduce their dumpster from an 8-yard dumpster to a 4-yard dumpster. They are now diverting over 9 tons of recyclables and 5 tons of organic materials from the trash every year.

Applewood Hills Golf Course’s Director of Operations told us, “Our customers appreciate that their waste is being processed in an environmental manner.”
