Grantee of the Week: Hamline University
Hamline University was a pioneer in food waste recycling, having started one of the first food waste recycling programs in the Twin Cities way back in 1991. When they were planning to relocate their main kitchen and food service operations, they wanted help to expand and improve their existing. That’s where BizRecycling came in.
Our Recycling Expert worked closely with Hamline University to evaluate their current recycling programs. Several opportunities for improvement were identified. Not only was there room for improvement with the food waste recycling, but also in the University’s single-sort recycling system.
Adding consistent color-coded trash and recycling collection bins throughout campus would bring Hamline University in line with recycling best practices. Streamlining processes in the kitchen prep area, cafeteria serving lines, and dish room would ensure that the maximum amount of organics would be captured for recycling.
With some investments made in a new recycling compactor and a reconfigured waste transfer system, Hamline University was ready to recycle better! These improvements paid off quickly; labor costs were reduced by 15% and trash hauler costs were cut in half. That adds up to a $6,000 a year savings!
Hamline University is a great example of how an organization that was already doing a great job recycling can use BizRecycling’s free services to help them recycle better. Our Recycling Experts have the knowledge and connections to make things easy for business owners. All you have to do is contact us, and our Recycling Experts will do the rest.
